Southern Union State Community College (SUSCC) prepares students for their next steps through quality teaching and responsiveness to the diverse needs of its students, community, business, industry and government. Since its formation in 1922, this two-year college has contributed to the success of countless students.

Not only does SUSCC prepare students for flourishing careers, but it also fosters lifelong friends and mentors who can be cherished for years to come. Alumna Brooke Bayliss is one of SUSCC’s many graduates who can speak to the direct impact of not only the education, but also the people and experiences she encountered during her time at the college.

Brooke Bayliss enrolled at SUSCC immediately after graduation on a music scholarship and soon realized it would become home. During her time there, she grew under excellent teaching and had the opportunity to be a part of “Southern Union Sound” under the direction of Ann Caldwell. Bayliss speaks fondly of the lasting impact that Caldwell has had on her life.

“Being surrounded by such talented, driven, and inspiring individuals shaped me in ways that extended far beyond the classroom—those experiences remain some of the most meaningful of my entire college journey. During my time at Southern Union, I built friendships that have truly stood the test of time,” said Bayliss.

Bayliss not only found meaningful friendships and mentorship at SUSCC, but her time at Southern Union also prepared her to attend Jacksonville State University, which led to a fulfilling role with First Bank of Alabama. There, she is proud to support individuals and businesses in her community of Wedowee. In 2021, Bayliss and her husband opened Lake Wedowee Winery and Brewery in the heart of downtown Wedowee.

Through her roles in both banking and her family business, Bayliss actively contributes to her community's growth and vibrancy. Her passion for both was cultivated during her time at Southern Union.
