Skills for Success Boot Camp

The training you need to get the job you want. Well-paying jobs with great benefits are available across Alabama and Southern Union is providing the education and training needed to get hired. The boot camp is open to residents 17 and older. 

These training courses are offered online, using a self-paced, and interactive learning approach that will need to be completed prior to the lab dates below. Upon completing the online portion, students should then attend the lab portion* of the course at Southern Union.

*Lab space is limited and priority will be given to those that complete the online portion of the course first. More lab dates will be available if your course is full.

Ages 17+, only requirement for enrollment is employability for heavy equipment and Food and Beverage
CDL Participants must be 18+

Tuition: Free*
*Costs will be associated with Class B CDL license, permit or physical.  

All participants are eligible for:

  • On-campus housing for the one-week boot camp (available upon request here)
  • Training that can result in an industry-recognized credential
  • Hands-on lab experience for specific training
  • Meetings with industry professionals to learn more about job opportunities in the region
  • Dining options available on campus ($7 per meal, all you can eat)

Graduates receive:

  • Southern Union Certificate
  • ACCS Credential

Programs Offered:

Heavy Equipment Operator (Skid Steer-Dozer-Roller) 

The Heavy Equipment Operator (Skid Steer-Dozer-Roller) will be offered Monday, June 5 - Saturday, June 10, 2023. Check in will be on Sunday, June 4. The operator will learn equipment applications, attachments, operating controls, preventive maintenance requirements, and basic operating techniques. Operators of all skill levels will learn concepts, objectives, and safety practices required for operating a Skid Steer, Dozer, and Roller. This course teaches you about safety, machine controls, maintenance, inspection, and operating procedures. For experienced operators, it’s a handy tool to refresh their knowledge.

Class B CDL Training

The Class B CDL Training will run Monday, June 5 - Saturday, June 10, 2023. This course aims to teach students how to operate a box truck with air brakes and a six-speed manual transmission. Class B CDLs are required to drive vehicles with gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWRs) over 26,001 pounds and towing capacities under 10,000 pounds. In most cases, Class B vehicles don’t have trailers.

Food & Beverage Services Training

The Food & Beverage Services Training will be a one day training offered on Friday, June 9, 2023. Participants will gain a general knowledge of the key terminology and best practices used in customer service, food safety, management principles, and essential cooking techniques, laws, and regulations that affect food and beverage business services and facilities management. Professional soft skills are also taught and emphasized throughout this training.
