Southern Union Joins BEST Robotics Program

Southern Union State Community College's Technical Education and Workforce Development Division has partnered with Auburn University's Ginn College of Engineering and College of Sciences and Mathematics to provide support for the BEST ("Boosting Engineering Science and Technology") Robotics program in East Alabama. The partnership will include two competitions, War Eagle BEST and South's BEST, as well as professional development opportunities for sponsoring faculty members in area schools. War Eagle BEST is an annual, six-week long fall competition for middle and high schools from Central Alabama and West Georgia. The South's BEST Regional Robotics Championship, which is hosted by Auburn University, features the top 50 teams from 12 BEST competitions across the Southeast.

BEST Robotics is more than a robotics competition – it is a workforce education delivery system. Students engage in the engineering process to design and build a robot that will accomplish a given task. They utilize engineering and technical skills to construct the robot from no more than a box of miscellaneous parts (junk). Along with the design-and-build process, students compile an engineering design notebook, develop a marketing presentation, and construct an educational exhibit booth. Through the BEST program, students develop technical skills as well as those ever important soft skills needed to successfully maintain employment in today's demanding labor market.

The partnership will allow Southern Union and Auburn the opportunity to collaborate on their shared, common goal of developing area youth into a competent workforce for today's high-wage, high-demand occupations.
