ACT Residual

Guidelines for ACT Residual:
Students who wish to apply for admission into the Radiologic Technology (RAD), Practical Nursing (PN) or Associate Degree Nursing (RN) (including mobility options) programs are required to submit a score on the ACT or ACT Residual along with the application for the nursing program. The ACT or ACT Residual measures basic essential skills in the academic content areas of reading, mathematics, science, and English. Scoring on the ACT or ACT Residual is utilized in the nursing and radiography entry process as points based on the total score. There is a minimum overall score of 18 required on the ACT or ACT Residual, but a higher score produces a higher point total for entry into these programs. There is no time limit on when the ACT test to be used for program admission was taken. 

Overview:

Residual ACT testing is available for students who are enrolled, have been admitted, or are in the process of applying to Southern Union State Community College.  Results of residual testing are only made available to Southern Union State Community College. No student or high school reports are generated, and no additional score reports may be requested to report scores to any other college.

Restrictions:

  • You must have a Southern Union student ID number to register to take the ACT-R at Southern Union
  • ACT Residual Testing is not a practice test.
  • ACT Residual Testing is not for use with younger students.
  • A minimum of 60 days must elapse before another ACT Residual Test may be taken. Scores achieved before the minimum elapsed time will be cancelled without refund.
  • ACT restricts the number of times a student may take the ACT to 12 times total. ACT Residual Testing does count toward that maximum. Scores that exceed the maximum will be canceled without refund.
  • There is not a time limit on the number of years since the ACT score was earned for nursing and radiologic technology applications.

Registering for the ACT Residual Test

The cost of the test is $71.50. The fee is non-refundable and reserves a place for the originally scheduled test date only.

You must have a Southern Union student ID number to register to take the ACT-R at Southern Union.  This number is issued upon submission of a completed application for general admission.

  • You must bring government issued identification displaying a current photo such as a driver’s license on the day of the exam.
  • Mechanical pencils will not be allowed in the testing room. You may bring #2 pencils or pencils can be provided by the testing center staff.
  • This is a paper-based exam.
  • Late arrivals will not be allowed to test and will therefore forfeit the testing fee.
  • All cell phones must be turned OFF during testing time AND breaks. Any violation of this policy will constitute a voided test.
  • Calculators must be an ACT approved model. It is the examinee's responsibility to know if their calculator is approved. This information can be found on the ACT website at www.act.org. If an examinee uses a prohibited calculator, the test will be marked VOID, not scored, and no money will be refunded.

Preparing for the ACT Residual:

ACT residual testing consists of four parts: English Test (45 minutes), Mathematics Test (60 minutes), Reading Test (35 minutes) and Science Test (35 minutes). Candidates must make an overall composite score of 18 or higher. For more information about the ACT test including test prep: www.actstudent.org.

Test Dates/Times

Read all details about the examination before registering. Testing fees are non-refundable.   STUDENTS MUST PAY FOR THE TEST TO RESERVE A SPACE FOR THE DATE REQUESTED.  

Students with accommodations approved by the College's ADA Coordinator must call 334-745-6437, EXT 5416 or email Robbie Whaley at rwhaley@suscc.edu to set up an appointment.  Proper documentation of the accommodation(s) is required.

*Testers arriving late or without the required identification will be denied access to the examination.  You must bring paid receipt and driver's license with you.  The ACT Residual is offered on the Opelika Campus. Testing times are listed by central time.  Dates and times listed are subject to change.  

Due to COVID-19 the ACT Residual l dates will be scheduled for a later date.

You must present an approved photo ID when you come in to test.  You will not be admitted without this item!

*It is possible the scores will be received within two weeks but there is no guarantee that test scores will be received by SUSCC in time for deadlines if testing occurs less than 4 weeks prior to the deadline.  There will be no exceptions to meeting admission requirements.  All ACT results must be received by the Admissions Office before application deadlines. Please be aware that space for testing is limited.  

ACT test results will be available in 4 to 6 weeks.  Results will be mailed to SUSCC Records Office only.  Sign in to your mySUSCC account for test scores.

** A minimum composite score of 18 on the ACT National or ACT Residual will be required for application to the Nursing and Radiography programs.
