Welcome to Southern Union State Community College and one of the finest technical/occupational training programs in the State of Alabama. Southern Union’s Technical Division programs prepare students for immediate employment, train existing employees for continued employment, and promote local economic development. Because 90% of the new jobs in this decade will require some form of college/training beyond high school and the fact that many young people either do not attend or do not complete a four year college program, Southern Union’s Technical Division programs are particularly appropriate in the preparation of our students to meet the demands of today’s and tomorrow’s labor market.

The Technical Division is composed of the following programs: Air Conditioning and Refrigeration; Automotive Collision Repair; Automotive Mechanics Technology; Cosmetology; Engineering and Graphics Design; Industrial Electricity/Electronics Technology; Machine Shop Technology; Manufacturing Technology; Welding Technology; and introducing Automotive Manufacturing Technology (beginning Summer Term 2009/10). The Division offers the following degree options: Associate of Applied Science and Associate in Occupational Technologies. Associate degree programs are two year occupational or technical programs designed to prepare students for immediate entry level employment in the field of study. Although these programs are not designed as transfer programs to four year colleges and universities, some academic credit may transfer as well as some occupational/technical credit may transfer into Applied Science degrees. See your technical advisor for additional information and always check with your advisor if you have questions about your program.

For those students that want a shorter program, the Technical Division also offered occupational certificates. These shorter programs contain many of the technical/occupational courses offered in the longer degree programs; however, they are reduced in the academic core courses. Certificate programs can be completed in one year.

Students who wish to enroll in the Technical Division should follow the admissions procedures as they are outlined in the current SUSCC Catalog. The Catalog is available in the Admissions Office, the Technical Division office, or on-line within this web site.

We thank you for your interest in Southern Union’s Technical Division programs and please feel free to contact our office at 334-745-6437, ext 5316 if you have any further questions or concern. The Technical Division offices are located in Building T-1 off the main entrance way. The Technical Advisor can be reached at 334-745-6437, ext 5305 and is located in the HAC Building.

Tech-Prep, Dual Enrollment, and Early College Enrollment are programs designed for you. Tech-Prep is a four-year planned sequence of study within a technical field which a student may begin in the eleventh grade of high school. The sequence extends through two years of postsecondary occupational/technical education culminating in an Associate’s Degree or a Certificate. Dual Enrollment is designed for students who wish to obtain high school and community college credit while still enrolled in high school. This credit is available in all technical programs. Through the Early College Enrollment Program (ECEP)qualifying high school juniors and seniors earn college credit while completing high school. ECEP students earn credits applicable toward high school graduation and college degree requirements at no cost to the student. See your high school counselor for more information.

Just about all programs within the Division are acceptable and certification is available for several of the programs. Classes can be held either at the business/industry or in one of our classrooms/labs. As with any program like this, they will vary in length and scope and are business/industry specific.
