Save Money

If the total cost of college looks formidable, look at Southern Union. Alabama's two-year colleges have the lowest tuition in the state.

Financial Aid

Any student who wants a Southern Union education will not be held back due to lack of funds. Southern Union's Financial Aid Office offers work-study employment, scholarships, and grants to help meet educational expenses. If you show academic promise and need help financially, visit or call the Financial Aid Office in Wadley (256/395-2211) or Opelika (334/745-6437). Work & Go To School

Classes are scheduled for nights and alternate weekdays, so you can keep your job or find one while attending college.

Career Development/Placement Services

The main purpose of an education is to prepare every student for a career suited to that student. The Career Development/Placement Office will assist students in achieving these goals. The office will also act as a liaison between students and the businesses and industries in our community who need part-time or full-time employees. The focus of the Career Development/Placement Office is to make Southern Union students and alumni aware of job openings and assist in their career development objectives.

Build Confidence & Academic Skills

If you feel your academic skills are shaky, Southern Union can help you boost your abilities and your confidence.

Use the Learning Resource Center

Southern Union has three Learning Resources Centers (LRC) located on the Wadley, Valley, and Opelika campuses of the College. Students have access to books through the WebCAT (on-line public access catalog). This system allows students to search all LRC sites simultaneously. The WebCAT may be searched by author, title, subject, and keyword. Researchers also have access to on-line databases through many different vendors, such as Bell & Howell, EBSCO Host, Electric Library, Encyclopedia Britannica, Grolier On-line, OCLC FirstSearch, and SIRS. The products of these vendors can be accessed through the Alabama Virtual Library website.

The collection of all three LRC sites includes over 92,000 physical volumes, as well as items of micro format; non-print items; local, state, and national newspapers; and periodicals.

Students Are Important

Smaller classes promote personalized instruction for anyone who has a particular strength or weakness.

"My first year at Southern Union was almost like an extra year of high school because my instructors were so interested in me personally, as well as my academic success. I have been able to keep my grades up as a result of the individual attention. When I talk to high school friends who started out at a major university they say it's difficult to get help from their instructors. When I tell my friends how helpful everyone is here, they can't believe it! I know I made the right decision in coming to Southern Union. It's close to home so I can still see my family on the weekends. Everyone here is just like a family. I'm having so much fun, especially living in the residence hall."

"Right after high school I enrolled at The University of South Alabama, but after a short time I realized that I wasn't ready for the big college atmosphere with large classes and instructors who didn't have time for me. I came to Southern Union not knowing what to expect. The small classes are great because the instructors have more time to give me the personal attention I need. Here, you can be close to everybody - I really like that. Being far away from home, I've found that everyone at Southern Union is very supportive - faculty, staff and fellow students. I only wish I could stay here for four years instead of just two."
