James B. Allen Award

The late Honorable James B. Allen, United States Senator from Alabama, presented to the college a large silver cup to be engraved each year with the name of an outstanding student. The student is chosen by a faculty committee appointed by the President. The committee selects the student on the basis of "character, leadership, scholarship, citizenship, and sportsmanship (not necessarily athletic)." At the spring graduation ceremony, the outstanding student is recognized and presented the award.

Athletic Awards

Athletic awards are given at the annual Athletic Banquet. Students earning school letters receive the award at this time. The awards may consist of a letter for freshmen and a plaque for sophomores.

The criteria for awarding letters is determined by the Letterman's Club with assistance from the coaches and the Dean of Students. All players, as well as managers and cheerleaders, are eligible to receive letters. Trophies denoting individual excellence are given in all sports.

An Academic Award in each sport is presented to the athlete who has the highest cumulative average after two semesters of participation.

All-State Academic Team

All-State Academic Team nominations are made annually in conjunction with the selection of the All-USA Academic Team. Southern Union shall nominate up to six students to participate in this competition. The purpose of this program is to provide statewide recognition to outstanding two-year college students based on academic and leadership performance.

Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges

Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges is a designation by a national organization to recognize outstanding college students. Selection for Who's Who is made by a faculty committee that is appointed by the Dean of Students. Criteria for selection include academic achievement and potential, contributions to the community at large, and promise of future usefulness as a citizen.

All-State Academic Team - All-State Academic Team nominations are made annually in conjunction with the selection of the All-USA Academic Team. Southern Union shall nominate up to six students to participate in this competition. The purpose of this program is to provide statewide recognition to outstanding two-year college students based on academic and leadership performance.

Most Outstanding Students

Three students, one each from the academic, technical, and health science divisions, are chosen annually and recognized at the spring graduation for their demonstrated academic record and leadership skills.

Ms. Homecoming

A woman student is selected by popular vote of the student population to receive this honor at the annual homecoming basketball game. Requirements for selection are specified in the SGA Constitution.

This position is a working honor requiring organizational skill, dedication, and leadership. The editor is selected by the Dean of Students and the advisor to the publication.

Southern Union Ambassadors

Southern Union Ambassadors serve as the official host and hostess group for various activities on campus including orientation, registration, recruitment days, tutorial sessions, academic tournaments, and graduation. Southern Union Ambassadors represent the top students at Southern Union. Students apply for consideration through the Associate Dean of Student Development.
