What is the Adult Education Program?

The Adult Education Program is an educational division of the State of Alabama Department of Education.

Southern Union State Community College (SUSCC) administers the East Central Alabama Adult Education (AE) Program in cooperation with the Chambers County, Clay County, Lee County, Randolph County, Auburn City, Opelika City, and Roanoke City school systems, and the Achievement Center/Easter Seal programs.

AE Classes: AE classes are available to any adult free of charge. AE classes provide individualized adult-oriented instruction to help the learner achieve his or her goals. AE classes provide instruction in basic literacy, all primary and secondary academic skills, preparation for GED test, and English as a second language.

Literacy Tutoring: The Adult Education Program is currently working in cooperation with the Lee County Literacy Coalition to provide volunteer tutors to help adults improve their reading skills. There are no classrooms and privacy is assured. A trained tutor is assigned to each adult. Instruction is tailored to the individual. For more information contact Jessica Nelson at (334) 705-0001.

Cooperative Programs: The Adult Education Program works in cooperation with local schools, social agencies, jails, libraries and churches to provide classes wherever and whenever it is convenient for the learner. Anyone interested in such a cooperative program should contact the AE coordinator.

Workplace Literacy: The Adult Education Program works in cooperation with local businesses and industries to provide workplace education. A specialized program is designed to meet the needs of employees. The cost of the program is shared between the employer and the Adult Education Program.

Referral: If you come in contact with someone who can benefit from our services, we would appreciate your informing them about Adult Education. Unfortunately, those who need our services the most are often the last to know about Adult Education. The class teacher or the coordinator will be eager to talk to you or the learner.

East Central Alabama Adult Education needs and appreciates all efforts to make adults aware of our services. We are eager for inquiries and suggestions about Adult Education in East Alabama.
