Overview

Surgical Technologists are vital members of the surgical team who work closely with physicians, registered nurses, anesthesiologists, and other surgical personnel. Duties include sterilizing instruments and surgical supplies, setting up the operating room with instruments and equipment, anticipating the needs of surgeons, and passing instruments, sutures, sponges, and handling surgical specimens.

Working Conditions:

Clean, brightly lit, relatively quiet, cool environment that may include working in limited spaces and standing for long periods of time. Protective clothing must be worn that includes hair and shoe coverings, facial masks, sterile gloves, and other surgical scrub clothing. At times, may be exposed to communicable diseases and unpleasant sights, odors, and materials. Work schedules may include day or evening shifts, weekdays, weekends, and scheduled on-call time including holidays.

Employment Opportunities:

Surgical Technologists are employed by hospitals, surgical & obstetric departments, physicians’ offices, and outpatient surgical clinics as well as materials management, sterile processing and medical sales representative. Satisfactory completion of the Surgical Technology two-semester (24 credit hour) program will qualify the graduate for an entry-level position in the Operating Room.

Admission Requirements - In addition to the general admission requirements of the College, admission to the Surgical Technology program requires:

1. Unconditional admission to the College.

2. 2.0 Cumulative grade point average (GPA).

3. Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.

4. Eligibility for English 101 or ENG 131 and satisfaction of the College Reading requirement.

5. Receipt of application for Surgical Technology Program.

Admission to the Surgical Technology Program is competitive, and the number of students admitted is limited by the number of clinical facilities available. Applicants are rank-ordered for acceptance using cumulative GPA with preference given to those students who have taken general education courses at Southern Union. Meeting minimal requirements does not guarantee acceptance.
