Overview

Nursing Assistants perform basic patient care under the supervision of an RN, LPN, physician, or dentist. Nursing assistants are employed in acute care hospitals, nursing homes and long-term care facilities, office settings, or home care settings.

Working Conditions:

Pleasant temperature controlled environment. Must respect the rights and dignity of individuals and display effective interpersonal skills, sensitivity, and tact with ill, injured, and suffering patients. Patient care environment may include working with persons with AIDS, AIDS-related diseases, Hepatitis, and other communicable diseases. Work schedules may include day, evening, or night shifts, weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

Credentials Earned:

Certified Nursing Assistant following passage of the Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Program (NACEP). Certification is required by all long-term care facilities/nursing homes.

Course Offerings

The Nursing Assisting Program is offered Fall semester (depending on student interest) on the Opelika Campus. The course can be taken for non-collegiate credit (NAS 100 Long Term Care Nursing Assistant).

Course Description

NAS 100. Long Term Care Nursing Assistant. 4 hrs.

Prerequisite: Determined by the instructor.

This course fulfills the seventy-five (75) hour Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA) requirements for training of long-term care nursing assistants in preparation for certification through competency for training of long-term care nursing assistants in preparation for certification through competency evaluation. Emphasis is placed on the development of the knowledge, attitudes, and skills required of the long-term care nursing assistant. Upon completion of this course, the student should demonstrate satisfactory performance on written examinations and clinical skills.

Eligibility Requirements:

1. Documentation of high school diploma, GED, or current high school enrollment.

2. Receipt of application for Nursing Assistant program.

Students currently enrolled in high school may enroll in Nursing Assisting courses, but the student must be aware that some employing agencies require employees to be age 18 years or older and have a high school diploma or GED prior to employment.

Registration Requirements - After admission to the program.

1. Current student malpractice insurance

2. Annual Health Questionnaire specific to the program of study verifying:

a. A state of physical and mental health such that the student is able to complete all program requirements without presenting undue risk/harm to the student or other persons.

b. Skin test for TB within the past year.

c. Ability to meet Technical Standards requirements as specified in the program of study.

d. Current immunizations, including Hepatitis B vaccinations. (The first Hepatitis vaccination is due prior to the first term of registration; the second Hepatitis B vaccination is due one month later; and the third Hepatitis B vaccination is due six months after the first vaccination.).

3. Verification of current American Heart Association CPR certification at the Health Care Provider level. No other CPR certification is acceptable.
