Overview

Registered Nurses (RN) are responsible for gathering information about patients using communication, physical assessment, and analytical skills; administering medications; performing invasive and non-invasive procedures; communicating with patients and their family members, peers, and other health care professionals in an effective manner; and teaching patients and their families to promote or restore health. Nurses must respect the rights and dignity of individuals and display exceptional interpersonal skills, sensitivity, and tact with ill, injured, and suffering patients. Nurses must assume a commitment to patient care and the responsibility of life-long learning.

Working Conditions:

Pleasant temperature-controlled environment. Patient care environment may include working with persons with AIDS, AIDS-related diseases, Hepatitis, and other communicable diseases. Work schedules may include day, evening, or night shifts, weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

Admission Requirements - In addition to the general admission requirements for the College, admission to the LPN to ADN Mobility option requires:

In addition to the general admission requirements of the College, admission to the Associate Degree Nursing Mobility program for paramedics requires:

1. Unconditional admission to the College.

2. An unencumbered or non restricted license as a Paramedic in Alabama.

3. 2.5 grade point average (GPA) on last 24 semester credit hours of completed coursework and a 2.0 GPA at Southern Union.

4. Transcripts from ALL post-secondary institutions attended.

5. Eligibility for English 101, MTH 100 (Intermediate College Algebra), and satisfaction of the College reading requirement.

6. ACT or COMPASS reading score taken within 3 years. Minimum of 76 required on the COMPASS reading examination or ACT equivalent.

7. Completion of prerequisite general education courses with a minimum grade of “C”. Courses are:

  • BIO 201 Anatomy & Phys I
  • BIO 202 Anatomy & Phys. II
  • BIO 220 General Microbiology
  • ENG 101 English Composition I
  • PSY 200 General Psychology
  • MTH 100 (Intermediate College Algebra) or higher level

8. One (1) year work experience as licensed paramedic within the last twenty (20) months.

9. Receipt of application for Associate Degree Nursing Program. Read direct ions carefully as incomplete applications will be discarded.

Acceptance to the Paramedic Mobility Option is competitive, and the number of students admitted is limited by the number of clinical facilities available. Applicants are rank-ordered for acceptance using a point system.  Meeting minimal requirements does not guarantee acceptance.

Curriculum

A standardized Comprehensive exam serves as the validation examination for Southern Union to grant the EMT-P an additional 12 hours of nursing credit. The students must pass this exam at a level established by the faculty .
