Overview

Registered Nurses (RN) are responsible for gathering information about patients using communication, physical assessment, and analytical skills; administering medications; performing invasive and non-invasive procedures; communicating with patients and their family members, peers, and other health care professionals in an effective manner; and teaching patients and their families to promote or restore health. Nurses must respect the rights and dignity of individuals and display exceptional interpersonal skills, sensitivity, and tact with ill, injured, and suffering patients. Nurses must assume a commitment to patient care and the responsibility of life-long learning.

Working Conditions:

Pleasant temperature-controlled environment. Patient care environment may include working with persons with AIDS, AIDS-related diseases, Hepatitis, and other communicable diseases. Work schedules may include day, evening, or night shifts, weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

Admission Requirements - In addition to the general admission requirements for the College, admission to the LPN to ADN Mobility option requires:

1. An unencumbered or non-restricted license as a Practical Nurse in Alabama.

2. Unconditional admission to the College.

3. 2.5 grade point average (GPA) on last 24 semester credit hours of completed coursework and a 2.0 GPA at Southern Union.

4. Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.

5. ACT or COMPASS reading score taken within 3 years with a minimum grade of 76 required on the COMPASS

6. Completion of the following with a minimum grade of "C":

BIO 201 Human Anatomy & Physiology I
BIO 202 Human Anatomy & Physiology II
ENG 101English Composition I
MTH 100(or higher) Intermediate College Algebra or MTH 116 Mathematical Concepts

7. Five hundred (500) hours work experience.

8. Receipt of application for the LPN to RN Mobility option.

Admission to the LPN to RN Mobility Program is competitive, and the number of students admitted is limited by the number of clinical facilities available. After meeting minimal requirements, applicants are rank-ordered for acceptance using a points system based on ACT or COMPASS Reading scores (minimum score of 76 on the COMPASS or ACT equivalent required) and quality points from selected college courses with preference given to those students who have taken general education courses at Southern Union.
