Overview
Registered Nurses (RN) are responsible for gathering information about patients using communication, physical assessment, and analytical skills; administering medications; performing invasive and non-invasive procedures; communicating with patients and their family members, peers, and other health care professionals in an effective manner; and teaching patients and their families to promote or restore health. Nurses must respect the rights and dignity of individuals and display exceptional interpersonal skills, sensitivity, and tact with ill, injured, and suffering patients. Nurses must assume a commitment to patient care and the responsibility of lifelong learning.

Admission Requirements - In addition to the general admission requirements for the College, admission to the Associate Degree Nursing program requires:


1. Unconditional admission to the College.

2. 2.5 grade point average (GPA) on last 24 semester credit hours of completed coursework and a 2.0 GPA at Southern Union.

3. Transcripts from ALL post secondary institutions attended.

4. Eligibility for English 101, MTH 100 (Intermediate College Algebra), and satisfaction of the College reading requirement.

5. ACT or COMPASS reading score taken within 3 years. Minimum of 76 required on the COMPASS reading examination.

6. Receipt of application for Associate Degree Nursing Program. READ DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY AS INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL BE DISCARDED!

Admission to the Associate Degree Nursing Program is competitive, and the number of students admitted is limited by the number of clinical facilities available. After meeting minimal requirements, applicants are rank ordered for acceptance using a points system based on ACT or COMPASS Reading scores (minimum score of 76 on the COMPASS or ACT equivalent
required) and quality points from selected college or high school courses with preference given to those students who have taken general education courses at Southern Union.

Meeting minimal requirements does not guarantee acceptance.
