The Social Science Department is responsible for the programs of study that deal with human behavior, history, and social and political structures. The department offers courses in criminal justice, ethics, history, political science, psychology, and sociology. These courses can satisfy Southern Union graduation requirements, and dependent upon an individual's program of study, can be transferred to four year colleges and universities.

The faculty in the Social Science Department are experienced, qualified individuals that focus on student instruction, assistance, and guidance. Faculty are accessible and responsive to student needs.

The department promotes academic excellence by organizing teams of scholars and academic tournaments. The Social Science Department sponsors an annual quiz bowl format tournament for academic scholars from the area high schools. Southern Union students are eligible to become members of the College Bowl Team, this group competes in game show style, question and answer competitions that are held at two-year colleges throughout the state.

College Bowl Team

The College Bowl Team is a group organized for the promotion of academic excellence. This group competes in state wide competitions with teams from other two-year colleges and assists with the organization and promotion of high school scholars teams. Admission to the group is by faculty selection based on grade point average.

The College Scholars Bowl Workshop is a course that offers the student preparation, practice, and participation in the College Scholars Bowl Program and competition. Students must have permission of the team sponsor in order to enroll in this one hour course.

Scholars' Bowl Tournament

The Social Science Department annually sponsors a series of competitions in a Scholars' Bowl Tournament. The Scholars' Bowl Tournament is open to high school students in Southern Union's service area.

The entry fee for the tournament is five dollars per student. A school may choose to bring its' entire Scholars' Bowl Team, however only six team members may compete in the tournament.
The entry fees include a meal which will be served at the campus. The College will provide a complimentary lunch for sponsors and bus drivers.
